Davao Region celebrates National Heritage Month with Tambayayong Dabawenyo

Eleven Tribes from all over Davao Region converge for a 3-day national heritage celebration through music, dance, songs and exhibits of artisanal practices in Tambayayong Dabawenyo from May 24 to 26.

Together with renowned performers Maan Chua of Mebuyan and Popong Landero, eight tribes showcased the richness of Davao’s culture and heritage in yesterday’s (Friday’s) launch which aptly opened Ayala Malls Abreeza’s Fashion Weekend Davao, which also focuses on artisanal heritage fashion and products.

The Mandaya Tribe of Davao Oriental headed by Tribal Chief Christine Banugan came all the way from Sangab, Caraga, Davao Oriental for a theater performance of music and deance traditions and actual live weaving of dagmay.

Members of the B’laan tribe, the Sangir and Manobo tribe of Davao Occidental traveled from far Balut Island, Sarangani Municipality and Jose Abad Santos for traditional dances, together with the tribes’ weaving and beading artists.

Members of the Bagobo-Tagabawa Tribe headed by Datu Gideon showed their traditional courtship dance on the Tambayayong stage. Weaving of Inabol is also being showcased at the Heritage Fashion Commune until Sunday, May 26 also at the Activity Center of Abreeza.

The elders from the Mandaya Tribe of Andap, New Bataan also graced the celebration with actual weaving of dagmay and a display of authentic tribal garbs.

Davao Region was also witness yesterday to the creations of Wilson Limon, the 2016 winner of the Davao Fashion Design Council’s Mindanao Heritage Fashion Design Competition. The fashion parade was opened by Hiyas Sa Kadayawan 2018 Nes-Ann Braem Naraga (Tribung Kagan), Hiyas sa Panaghiusa Sittie Aisha Hadji Salim (Maranao) and Hiyas sa Kalambuan Karen Joy Dowing (Bagobo Klata).

On May 26, three tribes from Davao City will take centerstage at 4pm. The Bagobo Klata, Tausug and Matigsalug will be joined by Madayaw Cultural Performers.

Tambayayong, a Bisaya term which means to act together, collaborate or converge. Tambayayong Dabawenyo is a Visit Davao Summer Festival Event hosted by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and Department of Tourism Region XI, in collaboration with the Davao Fashion Design Council and Abreeza. Event Partners include Air Asia, Invex and Cebu Pacific.
